The MM-5428CN can be integrated into controllers, storage filers, and servers that have an available PCI slot. Mapping its non-volatile memory to PCI memory space, the MM-5428CN capably creates a dedicated, distinct memory partition to handle tasks such as caching and journaling.

The MM-5428CN significantly improves the operation of I/O bound applications. Applications that particularly benefit from the card’s solid state NVRAM on the PCI bus include those that involve file journaling, sequential logging, or frequent disk I/O's, such as data warehousing, file serving and transaction processing.

A half size PCI card, the MM-5428CN features 256MB to 1GB of NVRAM and a 64-bit/66MHz PCI interface. To protect data in a power loss, the card is backed by on-board, redundant, rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Over 25 years of development, the card’s battery circuitry and failover have been refined to ensure first-class data retention and availability. The card’s LED status lights are software programmable, and the battery status registers in the CSR can be set to monitor battery voltage.

Residing on the PCI bus, the MM-5428CN facilitates I/O transfers to memory by way of available bus speeds as opposed to the usual latency of a cable interlink. The card's non-volatility characteristics enable users to save data that might otherwise be lost in a power failure or system reset. Equipped with solid state memory, the card eliminates head seek time that typically slows down rotating storage media. These assets, in addition to its data retention capabilities, set up the MM-5425CN as the preferred answer to journaling and caching needs.
