Firewire (IEEE1394B)
The FW1600 port card offers versatility, supporting a full range of Firewire data speeds from 400 to 1600Mb/s. Each card accepts 48 Firewire cables (9-pin) and, in accordance with IEEE standards, supports Firewire speed negotiation.
The port card receiver has a signal detect circuit with hysteresis that activates for incoming signals greater than 160 mV nominal and turns off for incoming signals under 120 mV nominal.
The receiver output is forced to logical zero when no signal is detected. The signal detector’s response time of about 0.5 microseconds is lightning fast compared to the 100-microsecond maximum signal detect response time specified for 1394b receivers. The signal path--from the port card receiver through the crosspoint switch of the port card transmitter--is DC-coupled. It can pass a steady logical zero indefinitely. The switched signal drives the port card's two-state differential transmitter. The transmit driver is AC-coupled to the cable, so the differential output voltage drops to zero when the signal is static. To prevent an unbalanced transient when the signal returns, an auxiliary circuit delivers a balanced charge to the AC coupling capacitors.
